I don’t play the clarinet anymore. In fact, I don’t actively play music anymore either. Ever since I graduated from high school, my clarinet has remained untouched. I chose not to continue band in college as pursuing marching band felt like more than I wanted to take on. But even so, I cherish every moment I spent playing the clarinet. Although I no longer perform, music continues to hold an important place in my life.

While I may not play music anymore, I listen to it every day. Having a musical background, I can appreciate the nuances of songs and have meaningful conversations about them with my friends that feel so fulfilling. I love revisiting songs that remind me of different chapters of my life just as much as I love discovering fresh, new ones. Music has a unique way of preserving memories while also creating new ones. Every song I hear for the first time becomes tied to a specific moment in my life, and hearing it again feels like traveling back to that time. It lets me escape reality for a while and immerse myself in a different world shaped by emotion.

Music can enhance cognitive development and learning

Music made me who I am today. It taught me that there are no shortcuts to improvement. Progress comes from consistency, patience, and maintaining a positive mindset. I’ve carried those elements into the competitive video games I play today. I’m mesmerized by the ladder of improvement and obsess over becoming better. Music also taught me that mistakes are a necessary part of growth. Every skill needs careful fine-tuning, and the only way to refine them is to try. To me, music was discipline.

The friendships I made through music are another reason it continues to matter. Spending countless hours rehearsing, traveling, and performing creates bonds that are hard to replicate anywhere else. Some of my closest friendships began in band, where we shared not only a love for music but also countless rehearsals, bus rides, performances, and memories.

Playing in a band gave me a sense of purpose during an important time of my life. The importance of contributing to something larger than myself immensely shaped my perspective. And in the end, music showed me that pursuing greatness is always worth the effort. Music is a language that transcends barriers and continues to influence the person I am today.
