Performing is such a privilege. I want to talk about performance in the hope that it inspires you or sparks a drive toward something meaningful to work for.
There are so many things I love about performing. When I was in band, it meant everything to me. All the hours of practice, all the blood, sweat, and tears, poured out through the emotions of the performance. It was freeing, it was moving, it felt like a weight lifted from my shoulders and an equally emotional weight placed gently onto the audience.
I have performed a countless number of times, and each experience was always different yet strangely familiar.I was just as nervous for my first performance as I was for my last. I would always shake beforehand, and even afterward chills would continue to run down my spine. There was never really anything to fear, yet the fear of the unknown overwhelmed me,even though performing became a common part of my life.Yet,every performance held something special.Sometimes I walked to a single music stand in a quiet room filled with chairs, other times I stood on the turf of a football field in a packed stadium. Some moved the hearts of just a few, while other performances meant everything to hundreds. But one thing was always certain:once I took a deep breath and blew into my clarinet,I took off.
It’s the feeling of being fully in the moment that I love and long for in performances. I play my whole heart out while time slips by, as I try desperately to stay present in the moment. No matter how scared or frustrated I felt about my playing, I loved the sense of meaning it gave me. Each performance felt like everything, because in that moment, it truly was. Music would consume me, and nothing else in the world mattered.
What I’m trying to express is that what I loved most about performing was the way it existed entirely in the moment. The emotions of a single performance can never be recreated — it happens once, and you become completely entranced by it until it ends. Music is beautiful in that way. I hope that the next time you perform, you are able to catch that fleeting feeling and truly savor it. And if you have never performed before, I hope you get to experience it someday.
