Being in band can be a thrill, but it is also important to prioritize your health. One of the most scary memories I have from marching band was watching someone slowly faint in real time. Since we often had to stand for hours on end, it was no surprise that some people would unknowingly lock their knees, which can cause fainting. I vividly remember seeing someone fall, struggle back to their spot, and then fall again moments later. Each time they got back up, they moved more slowly and seemed increasingly disoriented from a combination of dehydration and locking their knees. Eventually the people around them had them stay down, and they received medical attention soon after. Band is about pushing yourself to perform at your best, however it is just as important to stay aware of your physical limits because your health matters too.
Personally, I have only experienced a couple of injuries during band practice. During one of my first ever rehearsals, the heat was so intense that I could barely breathe. As we were rehearsing music standing still, at the time, I cared a lot about performing well. At some point though, I could feel myself starting to faint, so I simply sat down. Everything afterward felt blurry, and I barely remember what happened during these moments. That experience taught me how dangerous overexertion can be.
Another injury that comes to mind happened during a band trip to Chicago. We visited Cloud Gate, also known as “The Bean,” and after taking pictures, we were allowed to explore the area. Naturally, a group of us ran off to a nearby playground, which was actually pretty extravagant. There were so many bridges to cross, structures to climb, and all kinds of fantasy features to explore. There were also many slopes, which should not have been too much of an issue if not for the fact that it was very, very wet because it had recently rained. I somehow found myself slipping down one of the wet slopes, and crashed hard into a railing, cutting my knee. Thankfully, I was able to pick myself back up and get a bandage, but in that moment, sliding toward what felt like an inevitable injury was genuinely scary. Overall, the main message I want to share is this: always be mindful of your health. Band is important, but your well-being is just as important too.
