Throughout middle school and high school, most students in the band program took private lessons. I was one of those students, practicing with a professional clarinetist. Every week, I had about 45 minutes of one-on-one instruction and guided practice with my lesson teacher. I thoroughly enjoyed these lessons and found them to be one of the most valuable parts of my musical development.
Rather than focusing primarily on concert band music, we spent much of our time working on personal music, such as region band etudes and solo competition pieces. I felt that these lessons held me accountable for my progress and encouraged me to consistently improve. Outside of our lessons, I was expected to practice scales, warmups, and technical exercises to strengthen my fundamentals. The direct feedback I received on my audition music helped elevate my performances significantly.
What I loved most about the one-on-one setting was the opportunity to focus on the smallest of details that make music truly expressive. My lesson teacher helped me refine everything from reed selection and embouchure to musical phrasing and creativity, even down to the way I held the clarinet. This attention to detail was essential in helping me become the best musician I could be.
During the off-season, when there were no major auditions or performances to prepare for, we often played duets together. These are some of my favorite memories from my years of lessons. There was something beautiful and special about making music purely for fun. We would sight-read duets, harmonize on classic tunes, and play holiday music. It felt rewarding. Those moments reminded me of why I loved playing clarinet in the first place.
