It’s the summertime!
As you try to beat the heat, don’t let your musicianship suffer.

The summer season may be long and vast, but it’s easy to fall into many pitfalls that come with the season. Here are a few tips to help you remain at your best all summer long.
Try not to burn out.
The summertime is likely your longest break each year. More often than not, you end up with more free time than you ever imagined. It is quite easy to overdo it during the summertime. Always make sure you have time to rest and recharge. Enjoying activities outside of music is a great way to avoid burnout. Remember, a refreshed mind leads to not just better practice but also stronger performances.
Stay hydrated!
The summer weather brings a big, bright sun and the hottest temperatures of the year. It’s even more important to stay hydrated during this season. Of course, hydration keeps your body in check, preventing dry throats or cracked lips, which are essential for your success. But don’t forget the other benefits of water—it powers your brain, too. Staying hydrated is simple, but it can improve focus and reduce fatigue to a large degree.
Don’t melt!
While it’s important to keep yourself safe in the blazing hot weather, remember to take care of your instrument as well. For many musicians, it is imperative that you avoid leaving your instrument in direct sunlight or even a hot car. Extreme heat can damage or warp the material making up your instrument. This is detrimental to both your future performances and your wallet! If you are in a marching band, heat is inevitable—but be sure to find shaded areas to leave your instrument if you can.
It might be summer vacation, but try to practice a bit each week to keep your skills sharp. Perhaps you might even consider a summer music camp! With all of these tips in mind, you will set yourself up for success. Have a fun and productive summer!
