Ever write a few bars and it ends up sounding like a children’s song or lullaby?
Writing music can be easy, but crafting music that truly sparks interest is a difficult task.
Sure, the chords can flow easy on the ears and the melody can be harmonically correct, but sometimes the overall result can just sound corny. This pitfall is far too common, yet quite difficult to escape. However, today I want to give you a few ideas to avoid this.
Harmony
By far one of the most drastic ways you can transform a passage is by embellishing the chord. Suspensions can add a sort of tension or anticipation, while sevenths, ninths, or other extensions can introduce new colors. Even a simple chord progression can feel much more sophisticated with the right embellishments. These changes can add so much depth and emotional interest without having to rewrite the entire chord progression that was working before.
Rhythm
If a melody or bass line is a bit too boring, try spicing things up with a bit of syncopation. By placing notes not on the downbeats, you can create more engaging movement and make the music feel less rigid. Adding unique rhythms to individual parts helps the music come alive and create interest for the ear.
Texture
Some sections yearn to be different, yet sound the exact same. Try changing the texture! Whether that is cutting out instruments, boosting the volume of some, or introducing new instruments, a change in texture can give a section a fresh identity. Even a small adjustment can create contrast, making the music feel more dynamic and keeping the listener on their toes.
Though it can be a bit demotivating when your music turns out poorly, writing music should ultimately be fun. Don’t be afraid to experiment, make mistakes, and try something new. Keep these tips in mind whenever you feel stuck, and remember that even a small change can turn a boring passage into something much more interesting.
