Allow me to tell you a band horror story! As a high school clarinetist during marching band season, almost every Friday night meant attending a football game.We would spend the night playing spirit songs to hype up the team. This particular story begins on one such Friday.

Like any other band student,I hopped onto the bus and we headed to the stadium. I think it was called Dragon Stadium, though I am not entirely sure.By the time we arrived, the sun was just beginning to set,and the stadium lights softly illuminated the stands. I remember walking up toward our usual section, clarinet in hand, ready to set up, when something on the wall beside me caught my eye — hundreds of black dots.

At first,I thought that was strange. Then I leaned in for a closer look.

That is when I realized they were not dots at all — they were crickets.Hundreds of them, clinging to the wall.I immediately panicked and rushed up the stairs of the stands, desperately trying to erase the image from my mind.Once I settled into my seat,I placed my clarinet and belongings down, and as I looked below me…

…even more crickets.

For the rest of the night,I was completely surrounded. And it only got worse.Like it was straight out of a horror movie, the stadium lights above the clarinet section began attracting massive swarms of crickets.Thousands of them flew overhead, some zooming right past our faces.

Then the actual nightmare began.Crickets started raining from the sky —dead ones, falling all over our instruments, water jugs, you name it.They dropped like raindrops, and we were all in a state of panic for the entire second half of the game.It was a living nightmare. They would fall and crawl and they were everywhere.I distinctly remember that when the game finally ended,we played the school song.Halfway through,I stopped playing altogether because I panicked after a cricket landed on my head!

Once it was over,we made a quick escape to the buses, only to discover even more crickets had found their way into our belongings.By that point,I think you get the idea.

Weirdly enough,I look back on that night pretty fondly. It definitely made the football game more memorable than any other I played at. It was terrifying for sure, but that is what made playing in a band so special. You really never know what to expect.
